AI agents can shop. But can they be trusted to pay?

New Ecommpay research reveals the trust gap between AI shopping hype and agentic checkout reality.

Agentic commerce could transform digital shopping. But before AI agents can buy on consumers’ behalf, the industry needs to solve the trust gap.

Ecommpay’s new white paper, Before they check out, combines research from 1,750+ European consumers with insights from 16 senior merchants and payment leaders to uncover what’s needed before agentic checkout can scale.

Discover what consumers are ready to delegate, where confidence breaks down, and what merchants need from PSPs to make agentic commerce commercially viable.

Key findings:

  • 73.4% of consumers think AI shopping agents will become common in the next 5–10 years
  • 52.4% like the idea of agents comparing prices
  • Just 13.9% want agents to complete purchases for them
  • 50.1% would not trust an agent with their card details
  • 44.3% would limit agent spending to £100/€100 or less
