Recurring payment FAQs

Let’s decode the complexity

Recurring payments are transactions made using payment details a customer has previously authorised a business to store.

They may take place at fixed intervals, such as weekly, monthly or annually, or be triggered by an event such as usage, an account top-up or another variable charge.

Recurring payments allow businesses to collect payments without requiring the customer to complete the checkout process each time.

You can monitor recurring payment activity through the Ecommpay Dashboard or via API.

Both options give you visibility of transactions, payment history and retry activity. Your existing billing infrastructure can continue to manage subscription plans, pricing, customer data and cancellations.

There are two main types of recurring payment.

Scheduled recurring payments:

These take place at predetermined intervals, such as weekly, monthly or annually. The payment amount may be fixed or set according to the customer’s billing agreement.

Unscheduled recurring payments:

These are triggered when a payment is required rather than on a fixed date. Examples include usage-based charges, account top-ups, overages and other merchant-initiated transactions.

Payment tokenization replaces sensitive card details with a secure digital token.

This token can be used to process future recurring payments without repeatedly exposing the customer’s original card information, improving security and payment continuity.

Network tokenization keeps stored payment credentials up to date automatically when a card is renewed or replaced, and gateway tokens can achieve the same when paired with an account updater service.

This reduces avoidable declines, improves recurring payment acceptance, and helps prevent involuntary churn when a customer's card details change.

Supported options include tokenized payment cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, BACS Direct Debit and SEPA Direct Debit.

Availability will depend on the customer journey, recurring payment model and target market.

Ecommpay’s smart retry feature automatically makes further payment attempts according to a sequence and schedule configured around your business.

You can monitor and manage the retry queue through the Ecommpay Dashboard, helping recover more failed transactions without manually handling every decline.
